How banks and cooperatives in Nepal can answer every member call

· Updated

Ask anyone who has worked the phones at a cooperative about salary day and you will hear the same story. From about ten in the morning every line is lit. The person on the loans desk has a member sitting in front of her, two on hold, and a phone that starts ringing again the moment she puts it down.

Then ask what those callers wanted, and it is almost always one of four things. This month’s fixed deposit rate. Whether a branch is open on Saturday. What papers a home loan needs. Help with a mobile banking PIN that stopped working.

None of these are difficult questions. Every answer is already written down somewhere: on the rate sheet pinned by the counter, on the notice board, on page three of the loan brochure. The problem is only that hundreds of members want them read out at the same moment, and there are a handful of people to do it.

Reading out what you already publish

An AI call agent is well suited to exactly this. You give it the documents your staff already use, the current rate sheet, branch hours, the loan checklist and the mobile banking steps, and it answers members from them, in Nepali, on as many calls as come in at once.

A member asks about the one-year fixed deposit rate. The agent reads the rate from this month’s sheet, mentions the minimum deposit if there is one, and tells them they can open it in mobile banking or at any branch. If they then ask which branches open on Saturday, it answers that too.

When rates change at the start of the month, you upload the new sheet. The next caller hears the new rate. In a bank, this matters more than anywhere else. Reading out last month’s rate to a member is worse than not answering at all, and an agent that always uses the latest sheet removes that risk.

The line it does not cross

The first question every bank asks is the right one: what about accounts?

The agent cannot see balances, transactions or anything about a member’s own money. It is not connected to your core banking system, and it does not need to be. When a member asks why a transaction failed, or what their balance is, it says plainly that a staff member will help, and transfers the call with a short note of what was asked.

In practice that split works well. The general questions, which make up most of the volume on a busy day, are answered straight away. The personal ones, which need a person and often some care, reach someone who is not already stuck answering rate enquiries.

A record of every call

Every call is recorded and written out as text, and you can search the transcripts by topic. If a member later says they were promised a different rate, you can find the call and listen to it. For a compliance team, that searchable record is often worth as much as the answering itself.

It also shows you, over a few weeks, exactly what your members call about. Sometimes a single unclear notice turns out to be behind a large share of the calls, and rewriting it does more than adding another person to the phones.

Where to begin

Most banks and cooperatives start with the busiest days and after hours, when members otherwise hear an engaged tone or no answer at all. You keep your existing number, so members notice nothing except that someone picks up.

Questions people ask

Can an AI call agent answer bank and cooperative calls?

Yes, for general questions. It answers rates, branch hours, loan documents and mobile banking steps from the material you upload, in Nepali.

Does the agent see member account balances?

No. It is not connected to your core banking system. Questions about a member's own account are transferred to your staff with a note of what was asked.

How are interest rate changes handled?

You upload the new rate sheet when rates change. The next caller hears the new rate, with nothing to re-record.

Are bank calls recorded?

Yes. Every call is recorded and written out, and the transcripts can be searched by topic, which helps compliance teams review what members were told.

Can it handle the salary-day rush?

Yes. It can be on up to fifteen calls at the same time, so members are not left on an engaged line during the busiest days.
